“So, in your journey of learning the stock market, did you learn from a YouTube channel as well?” I asked with curiosity.
Umesh paused, as if gathering his thoughts, and then continued, “I started my trading journey in 2008. At that time, as you know, there was almost no Indian market-based YouTube channel, so in my initial phase, no, I didn’t follow any.”
“Okay, and later?” I showed my interest in his journey of learning.
“Well, yes! A few years later, I followed a few, but you know what, most of the YouTube channels that are teaching technical analysis are telling nothing beyond technical indicators, support, and resistance.”
“True,” I remarked.
“That makes no sense in trading,” he said in a serious tone. He then continued, “With my experience, I can say this: real learning is possible only when you are guided by a mentor.”
“You mean, LIVE classes?” I interjected.
“Yes, LIVE classes, online or offline, don’t matter, but you have to be disciplined and focus while learning,” he explained.
Telling more benefits of learning with a mentor, he said, “Now, live classes give you the chance to clear your doubts, to discuss your trades, which helps you in finding your errors.”
“Correct, I totally agree with you, and that’s a brilliant way to learn. Having someone review your trades with you takes it to the next level,” I said while sitting in a straighter position.
“So, in a nutshell, Umesh, what would you say is the one thing traders should focus on, besides watching YouTube videos and relying solely on indicators?“
“If you would ask about one thing, I would ask them to clear their ‘Why,‘” said Umesh with confidence in his tone. “I became a successful trader because I was passionate about trading. As discussed, I started trading in 2008, and at that time, I used to trade in mini silver in the commodity segment.”
“That time, people were not even aware of trading as they are today.”
“Yes, and not only YouTube, but there were no mentors either, who could teach you. But if I talk about today, one can easily find a mentor to learn the stock market. But yes, in that case too, ‘Why’ is important. Also, above that, it is important to make sure that you are following a mentor for knowledge, not for shortcuts to trading or profit,” he explained
“Great statement, Umesh! That wins my heart,” I replied cheerfully.
“Okay, and what’s that?” I asked with curiosity.
“There is a small incident behind what I said,” he said with a smile.
“Back in 2012, I used to make trade videos for pre- and post-market analysis and publish them on YouTube. I got great fame from there. A few months later, I received a call from someone who asked me if I gave tips.”
“Oh, shucks! Even at that time?” I responded.
“Yeah, that’s been happening for years,” he said, and continued, “I then asked him how much he wanted to make in a month. He replied, ‘₹2,00,000’.”
“Wow!” I exclaimed.
He continued, “I then asked, ‘Okay, and how much capital do you want to invest?’ He said, ‘₹50,000’.”
“Hahaha!” I laughed out loud.
“See, people have no idea of risk-reward, yet they want to be traders. They think they can do so by following any YouTuber showing trades and their P&Ls,” he said, shaking his head.
“Truly said,” I replied, reflecting on his words.
Reflecting on Umesh’s words, it’s clear that the stock market is not about quick shortcuts or relying solely on indicators.
Real success comes from passion, understanding, and learning from someone who has been through the ups and downs.
The journey may seem daunting at times, but with the right mentor guiding you, a trader can unlock a deeper, more meaningful way of navigating the market.
And perhaps, this is the key difference between those who gamble in the stock market and those who trade with true purpose.
